About

AMCC has been very active since beginning their new directions in outreach.  We have visited several outpatient groups around the state with our members sharing their personal stories of survival and success as well as their stumbles.  We share the knowledge of programs we have learned about through conferences, training and experiences as well.  Our members speak to the other consumers about such subjects as medication, housing, wellness, how to speak out and have a voice, voting, how to help others, and how to start a support group of their own.

During these events we have the opportunity to meet and befriend fellow consumers and providers who may not know some of the services that are available to them from the Department of Mental Health and Retardation. Speaking to these groups in a way puts our members in the role of consumer/provider and many of the people we share with begin to understand that they are limited only by their own fears.  We are sometimes asked to speak one on one to some of the group members where we have shared many tears and much laughter uplifting each other with good words.

AMCC has also set up  booths at several Health Fairs.  We had noticed that mental health issues are underrepresented at these events and decided we could make a difference if we were there.  We have really had a good response to our participation in these events and many of individuals have requested additional personal information about mental health and organizations that we send to them later.
